INTRODUCTION
------------

During the early seventies, I spent most of each working day in one or other of the, then, four Milford Haven refineries. When sailing in the area, the tanks, stacks and columns of the refineries stood out on the skyline.
When John Woodside and I set out to create the UK ANO scenery, I found myself with large Chimney Stacks on the refinery sites, but nothing else. That lead to a wish to see the sites better populated by objects that could be seen from the air. Flying over the area became a frustration, which just had to be removed.
This UK Refineries project became possible entirely through the generous offer of Ted Andrews, to create Gmax versions of storage tanks and a variety of refinery units, which I could place, mutilate, etc, to achieve the end in mind.
The intention has not been accurately to reproduce the layout of each, or any, of the twelve refinery and petrochemicals sites covered. Instead, the aim was to produce an impression of each site that got close to the its real life skyline silhouette, as seen in photgraphs of the sites. My thanks to Gordon Luck, the Institute of Petroleum, and others, whose photographs have been made available, or are published on their websites. By comparison with the real locations, there are many parts of each site unoccupied. I tried including smaller units and buildings but they proved to be difficult to spot, so not worth the impact on scenery size.
It is assumed that cooling towers and taller chimneys will already be located, via UK ANO and UK ANO Vol 2, so they have not been repeated, in this scenery issue.
None of the sites in Scotland have been included, since they are covered in the excellent Scotflight Scenery.

Coverage
--------
This list is probably inaccurate, since it uses the names used by the refineries, during my time in the industry. At least one, included, is now closed. Sites included are:

Milford Haven Area
------------------
Amoco
Gulf
Texaco
All can be seen, when on an 8 mile finals to Haverfordwset's Rwy 03.

Cheshire
--------
Stanlow
Visible from the ground, at Liverpool Airport.

North Eastern England
---------------------
P.I.P.
Wilton
Billingham
Seals Sands
All visible, from the circuit, at Teesside Airport.

Humberside
----------
Lindsey
Conoco
Salt End
Clearly visible when landing or taking of, from Humberside Airport.

Essex
-----
Coryton
The approach to London City's Rwy 28 crosses the refinery.

Hampshire
---------
Fawley
Visible, when on finals to Southampton Airport's Rwy 02.

Installation
------------
Having unzipped UKREFINERIES.zip, in a Temporary folder, the contents will be seen to be:

ReadMeFirst.txt the file you are now reading.
EFFECT folder
UK REFINERIES FOLDER.

Open the EFFECT folder and transfer the Bleedstm.fx file to the EFFECTS folder, in your FS9 or FS2002 Root folder.

Transfer the UK REFINERIES folder to your FS9 or FS2002's Addon Scenery folder.

If you have UK ANO and UK ANO Vol 2 installed, then before installing, in the usual way, it is neccessary to remove a few files. This is because the original, CAA listed, positions clash with the photographic evidence.
If you open the UK ANO's Scenery folder, transfer the following files from the Scenery folder to the main folder:
S_FAWLEY2
S_NKILLINGHOLME
S_STANLOW

Go to UK ANO Vol2 and do the same thing with:
F_N KILLINGHOLME
F_N KILLINGHOLME_F
S_CORYTON
S_CORYTON_S
S_N KILLINGHOLME_S
S_N_KILLINGHOLME

Now Add the UK REFINERIES scenery to FS2002 or FS9, in the normal way, remembering that in FS9 it is neccesary to close and restart FS9, after adding a new scenery to the Library section, before it will be activated.

SETTINGS & KNOWN ISSUES
-----------------------
All scenery is in Gmax and has been exported using Normal scenery scettings. Provided that your FS9 or FS2002's Options, Settings, Display, Scenery Complexity is set to Normal, or higher, all the scenery objects should display.
On my P4 2.8Gb equipped machine, there is no significant reduction in framerates.
A known issue is the failure of FS9 to display the textures, until within about 5 miles, or unless Zoom values are increased. It would have been possible to avoid this problem, minor though it is, by using a different scenery placement system. Use of that system would, though, have made it impossible to use this scenery with FS2002.

Acknowledgments
---------------
For the creation of all Gmax objects used in the scenery, I am indebted to Ted Andrews, without who's contribution the scenery would not have been possible.
For photographs of the real life installations I am indebted to Gordon Luck, to the Institute of Petroleum and a number of unknown photographers, whose work may be viewed via the internet.

Future Work
-----------
To produce a Refineries scenery of the type I wished to see on my own system, has resulted in a bigger download than I'd have hoped for. Work on a couple of other petrochemicals sites, plus the numerous coastal and estuarine Fuel Storage Depots has therefore been held over for a future project.
